I do really appreciate the challenge that Anand Giridharadas has made. He’s got some pretty great points, and as he admits, no real solutions to the problems he points out.

Something that’s been missed though is that the B Impact Assessment is an evolving process. My business OpenConcept has gone through it 3 times now and each time it is hard. The new version will incorporate elements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Hopefully in the future it will include more elements inline with the Science Based Targets Initiative too.

I used to believe that democracies could be convinced to act, but with the polarization that has happened on this issue globally in the last decade, I just don’t see how change through the ballot box will be sufficient.

We really need everyone onboard. Will B Corp be sufficient? On it’s own, probably not. However, I do believe that a network group of businesses working to redefine their role in society is critical. We need all of the organizations between the individual & the government to start working on this. This simply can’t be a problem that we leave to the individual or the state, but obviously both of those will need to be actively engaged.

I wrote this article prior to Trump’s election https://www.huffpost.com/entry/why-bcorps-are-critical-f_b_12638114
