I would definitely update it, with or without COVID-19. There hasn’t been much progress on these issues in the last two years, but now the ACA is law and the technology landscape has changed a bit.
#1 — Rocket.Chat is still great, as is Riot! But the GC seems to have completely failed to promote it internally. The hope that Microsoft Teams was going to solve the problem of messaging. From what I understand Teams tends to cement silos rather than dissolve them. I don’t agree with the strategy, but if the plan is to only use MS Teams, there’s not much point in investing in anything else.
#2 — GDPR, privacy is a big an issue as ever. I don’t think that there has been a coherent response for how this sudden digital transformation should deal with either privacy or security. Even basic things like securing our wifi could be useful.
#3 —WET & WCAG 2.1 AA, this all still needs to be done. There has been a little progress, but WCAG 2.2 should be finalized this fall.
#4 — Drag and drop, still needs to be done. Not much has happened on this front in the last 2 years.
#5 — CKEditor & Axe, still needs to be done.
#6 — Dragon Naturally Speaking, still needs to be done.
#7 — Alexa Skill for a FAQ, I’m not sure what the status of this is, but I do think it might make more sense to simply review what has been implemented. There should be enough information out there now to allow governments to have a better sense of what is likely to provide value.
#8 — Keyboard Only Focus, this still hasn’t been added to WET, but it is in the pipeline. Ultimately we can probably just copy what GDS has done in the UK.
#9 — Bring Preference Framework into WET, still needs to be done.
#10 — Site-wide Accessibility Reviews, GDS and CDS are both looking at this. We’re developing our own framework for it too. A lot of additional work is needed though. From our preliminary work it is clear that government sites have lot more work they need to do to achieve WCAG 2.0 AA requirements.
Thanks for circling back on this Mary Beth.
